Why Learning to Read Can Be Difficult: A Guide for Parents & Educators

June 20, 2022

There is no question that learning to read is one of the most important skills a child can acquire. It opens up a world of possibilities and allows children to learn about new things and explore different topics.

However, reading can be difficult for children, and it can be challenging for parents to know how to help their children overcome these difficulties. But, children are sponges, and we all know it. They soak up everything around them—the good, the bad, and everything in between. And that’s exactly why we must start early!

1. The most important reason why learning to read can be difficult for kids is because children have difficulty with phonics. Phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds, and it is an important part of learning to read. Many kids struggle with phonics because they have trouble understanding how letters represent different sounds.

2. Other reasons include difficulty decoding phonemes or the smallest units of sound in a language. When children are able to decode phonemes, they can begin to put together words and then start reading. However, many kids struggle with this skill, and as a result, they have trouble reading.

3. Fluency also accounts for a major difficulty while learning to read. Fluency is the ability to read quickly, accurately, and with expression. Many kids struggle with fluency because they have trouble reading smoothly and without errors.

How can we help your children?

When it comes to teaching your children how to read, why wouldn't you want to give them the best advantage possible? The HOSS uses fun activities including games to help decode phonics and make learning reading fun for children through online classes. We provide them with resources that will help them practice phonics, such as content that focuses on letter-sound correspondence or games that involve matching words with pictures. We also work on phonemic awareness skills, such as rhyming and segmenting words into phonemes and everything that makes phonics for kids.

In addition, we help children build their fluency skills by having them read aloud to us frequently. With our help, your child will be able to overcome the difficulties of learning to read and become a successful reader!

Also, we will request parents to additionally help kids learn how to read by providing them with plenty of opportunities to practice phonics for reading. This can be done by reading aloud together, or by letting them read simple books on their own. It is also helpful to encourage kids to write down words that they see around them. So what are you waiting for? Start teaching them reading today!
